This blog is dedicated to the journey of a litter of Dachshund puppies in our hopes of using early learning and enrichment to make them field trial champions.

A Bit of a Snag
Last night, after I taught classes at the kennel I went in to see Neena. She looked great and was starting to have some contractions. It looked like it would be a while so I decided to go home. Sue promised to call or text when the puppies were born. I got up this morning with no text, which surprised me. I texted Sue to find what was happening. She was at the emergency clinic with Neena who contracted all night but produced no puppy. They did an x-ray and everything looks good. Sounds like uterine inertia. She is getting fluids including some oxytocin. If no puppy soon, she will have a c-section. She is good hands. Sue is with her. Stay tuned....

It's getting close!
I just left Sue's and Neena was getting very close to delivering. It could still be hours, but she is having contractions here and there, nesting and very restless. She is doing great so far. Sue will sleep in the guest room where the whelping box is with Neena and poor Jack (Aussie) and Guppy (miniature wire Dachshund) and Sara (standard smooth Dachshund) will have to be abandoned for the night. Here is what Neena was looking like shortly before I left her:

Bigger and Bigger and Bigger and the Rabbit Arrived!
Saw Neena the other day in all her glory! What a happy, rolly polly girl she is right now!! She insisted, no demanded multiple belly rubs. She gave me "the look", and rolled over onto her back. I, of course, did just what she asked:) In all seriousness, she looks big to me. We are all getting excited.
I am also excited that the rabbit scent that I ordered has arrived! I am thinking that I will start playing with it with Ribbon maybe before the puppies arrive so that I have some to get to know it, how to handle it and how I want to store it.
It's all happening!

Go Casey!
As of right now, Casey, the puppies sire is currently ranked NUMBER ONE field trial Dachshund! We are hoping for puppies with a "golden nose" like their Daddy's!

Waiting for the buns to bake...
The waiting really IS the hardest part! I saw Neena the other day and she is looking REALLY big! It is hard (and a little bit frightening) to think that she had another month to go! If there are only four they are big ones. I'll bet that there is more. The good news is that Neena will be xrayed this month so that we will know what to expect when the time comes. I think it's time for me to go ahead and order the rabbit and hare scent! I can't wait to start putting together my training plan for the puppies! So exciting!
