The puppies are doing well. It has been hot in Dublin and Sue introduced them to a wading pool which they love! Venom, of course, came home with me. I registered him with the name Dublin's Black Metal at Braveheart. Sue, kept Dolly (pink collar) and is naming her Dublin's Black Diamond. She is still picking out a call name but is thinking of Jewel or Karat, I love both! Sharon took home Daisy (yellow collar) and named her Carrdox Little Black Dress of Dublin and calls her Posh. I love that! Rainbow Brite, the smaller of the longhairs is going to her new home after July 1st. Her call name is Ginger, but I don't know what the registered name will be. Violet, the other longhair is going to Canada to live with one of Sue's cousins who has been contemplating a second dog for a long time! That just leaves Bluesy, now Slick, whose registered name is going to be Dublin's Black Ice! Love it! Sue is looking for a wonderful show/field home for him, of course he has to be a pet first! The puppies are awesome and growing up beautifully!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5100285950196544575.post-87159449869571887522011-06-13T22:17:00.000-07:002011-06-13T22:17:40.197-07:00Venom goes solo!I have really enjoyed blogging about these puppies and will continue to post when things come up about the litter. I have had so much fun that I decided to continue blogging about Venom, the puppy I took home from the litter. To follow Venom and his training progress please visit his solo blog at www.teachingvenom.blogspot.com.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5100285950196544575.post-6981353974097082512011-06-13T09:41:00.000-07:002011-06-13T09:41:56.348-07:00Venom is home!On Saturday, Sharon Carr (Carrdox Dachshunds) who is the breeder of both Neena and the owner and co breeder of Casey came over to look at the puppies and pick hers out! Yvonne Chohan, my friend and training assistant came over to do some stranger behavior assessments. It was all very interesting and super fun!

Typically, Sharon and I are very close in our evaluations. We know what we like and we usually know what one another will like. That can happen when you breed, show and co own with someone for many years. This time we had slightly different opinions.

She liked the two smooth girls very much which isn't surprising because they are very similar and both very nice. In the end, Sue kept the pink girl (because that has always been her favorite) and Sharon took the yellow girl. Even though Sharon liked Bluesy better in terms of structure, I chose the Green boy. I chose him for a few reasons. First, while I really love Bluesy's look, I still really like how Green looks. He is a bit smaller, but very balanced and well put together. The truth though is that I chose Green because of his more laid back temperament, his obvious sociability with humans and because he showed slightly more interest in the scent when we laid a tiny rabbit scent track. So, Green is now Venom and he is home!
It's time! The puppies will be seven weeks old tomorrow. Deciding when to take a new puppy home or when to let your puppies go can be a difficult decision to make. The most common age is 8 weeks old, but many people believe that it is actually better to take them home at 7 weeks because they have not yet hit the more fearful age period or waiting until after that more fearful period from about 8 to 10 weeks. We really don't want any huge, changes happening in their lives during that period, however, that said, I have taken home many puppies at 8 weeks old and they did just fine but it is because I was very thoughtful and careful with the puppies, taking care to make sure that they did not have scary or overwhelming experiences.

Since the puppies will be 7 weeks tomorrow and because I have the time and experience to carefully work with a young puppy, I will likely bring him home this weekend. Yikes! I guess that means I have to decide which puppy I am taking!

I went over today and spent some time with the puppies. First, me, Sue and Michelle (one of my closest friends and the groomer at the kennel Sue owns) all sat on the patio while the puppies ran around playing. I watched them and interacted with them. They are all very outgoing, curious and active. The biggest difference in their temperaments is that some of them seem to want to be held more than others and seek to be picked up.

We then took them inside and I stacked each puppy individually. I am impressed with how they did. I stacked them on a "Staxrite" stand which essentially a tray with two strips of wood so that the puppy can learn to stack. The actual pieces that the puppy stands on are only about 3 inches off of the ground. I used soft slices of American cheese so that the puppies were distracted and focused as I stacked them. They all did really well. They all stood relaxed with soft wagging tails, eating their cheese.

Of course, we are getting a male which means that I only really have to concentrate on the two males. They are very different in structure and temperament. Emotionally, I am attached to them equally which is good because I am sure that I can make my decision based on the right criteria.

As I have mentioned before, not one piece of either puppy can account for everything. Rick really wants to field trial this dog, but when I asked him point blank what he felt was more important, living with him or hunting with him? He said without question that because he would only be field trialing with him a few weekends a year, it was more important that he enjoy living with him. I have been eye balling the puppy that is the most active, persistent, busy and independent, which I would like in a field dog, however, those qualities may not be what we want to live with. In addition to the field trials, I plan to compete with the puppy in conformation, so I obviously want to show the puppy with the most show potential, but I am not willing to compromise on the best temperament for our lifestyle and home. Rick absolutely refuses to choose the puppy and has told me that he wants me to pick.

I have been going back and forth for weeks and now the time has come. In a few days, I will make my choice. Sharon is coming this weekend and will look at the puppies and be able to give me her input but I think at this point I am pretty sure what I am going to do. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5100285950196544575.post-81033554749379230782011-06-02T21:31:00.000-07:002011-06-02T21:31:38.066-07:006 weeks tomorrowThe puppies will be 6 weeks tomorrow! How time flies! I went over today and spent some time with them. I did a few scent activities with them today. First, I added a lot more rabbit scent to my spray bottle and heavily scented their rabbit pelt. Then, I pulled the pelt around for them to chase. Bluesy (blue yarn), Green Bean green yarn) and Daisy (yellow yarn) showed the most interest in the pelt, although they all messed with it from time to time. Daisy carried it around for a long time and showed a huge amount of interest in it. Bluesy and Green Bean also tugged on it alot with each other and with Daisy, as a trio.
Next, I took three small tennis balls and scented one (the orange one) with rabbit scent. There was definitely more interest in the scented one. A few of them even carried it around. Bluesy was very interested in that one ball and even took it into one of the beds. Bluesy and Violet are shown carrying it around.
As I have mentioned in this blog, this puppy is a great great grandson to my old dog Ivy who will turn 14 years old next month. We are very excited about this puppy as it is the first standard smooth puppy we have had in about 8 years.

We have a lot in store for Venom. The plan is that he is going to be Rick's new field trial dog which is why we are doing so much early scentwork with this litter. But, we have other plans for him as well. I am going to show him in the breed ring and plan to finish a championship on him. I will also probably do K9 Nosework (scent detection dog sport) with him. On top of all that, he will be living in our house with 9 other dogs. So, there is a lot we need to look at here.

Temperament to me is the number one priority. I want a pretty dog and I want a dog that can hunt, but most of all I want to live with a nice dog. To be honest, I will take emotionally stable over "pretty" any day. I feel strongly about this and frustrated because I feel that a lot of breeders put structural conformation over temperament a lot. I see it all the time, dogs that are placed or kept as show dogs because they look nice but have unstable temperaments. I am not saying that these dogs can't become great companions only that they shouldn't be put into the show ring and used in our breeding programs.

So, in a few weeks I will have to decide which puppy will be coming home with us. I am pretty sure I have made up my mind, but I am staying open. Generally, I would pick the best structured puppy for the show ring. This time, I will choose the puppy that will make the best pet and field dog for us. I am 100% willing to compromise on conformation in order to get the right temperament for what we plan to do with him. Both of the males are very nice and I am sure both will finish easily, but they are slightly different in type and I may end up taking the one that is less the type I prefer in order to get the right companion for us and to ensure that both puppies end up in the best homes for them. I think it important to keep in mind that both of these puppies have a right to go into the homes that are best matched for them and who they are and what they will be best at whether that is competing in the field with us or going to soccer games with some great family. This piece is huge and it matters greatly to us and to Sue.

I am excited for the day to come when we bring Venom home and I can't believe it's only a couple of weeks away.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5100285950196544575.post-8919486275117758532011-06-01T14:19:00.000-07:002011-06-01T14:19:08.324-07:00A discussion about fear/confidenceLast week after having the puppies out to the training yard and having a lot of new things for them to explore and investigate I blogged about it and how surprised I was about their level of confidence. Sara Watson, a good friend of mine, fellow dog trainer and Basset Hound breeder commented that she thought it was completely normal for them to be this confident at 5 weeks. She was confused by my (and Sharon and Sue's) surprise about this. Which of course got us talking about this in depth (which is happens when you get two dog trainer/behavior consultant/dog breeder geeks talking about the behavior of 5 week old puppies).

I felt sure that these puppies were more confident than other puppies at this age. Then Sara asked, "Are you sure you aren't thinking of them at 8 weeks?". Well, I was sure, but now, not so much. The truth is, I can't say for sure. At first I thought I had not done this type of work with them before, but then I distinctly remember taking one of Ivy's litters outside (which are now 9 and 11 years old) and putting long boxes for them to run through as well as other items for them to investigate. Come to think of it, I don't remember them being afraid either. So, maybe all of our past litters were this confident and I forgot?

Sue, Sharon and I discussed it and what we expected to see was the puppies huddle together for a few minutes, looking at things, soaking up the environment, then begin to spread out and check everything out. This is very different from what they did which was scatter and immediately start running to everyone and everything. It wasn't like we thought they would be afraid or anything, just that they would need a moment to soak it in, but they didn't.

Sara thinks that we just forgot the age and it may have been closer to 8 weeks in the past when the puppies would likely be more cautious. She could be right, I'm not sure now. All I am sure about is that I am really happy with how these puppies are coming along. This conversation has pushed me to pull out all my puppy raising books and go over all the information on developmental periods so that the information is fresh in my mind. It has also convinced me how important it is to take notes and keep records of all of this stuff so that the next time, I won't be back here wondering when everything happened.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5100285950196544575.post-4892295893639170372011-05-31T20:27:00.000-07:002011-05-31T20:27:57.652-07:00New sounds for the puppies!I brought Sue a puppy habituation CD for the puppies the other day and she began playing it for them! The CD has sounds of children playing, a baby crying, vaccum cleaner, kitchen sounds, thunderstorms and fireworks and can help puppies get used to those sounds early on so that they are very comfortable with all of those things later on in life. The puppies were not concerned at all by the sounds. Interestingly, Sue said that Neena became very agitated at the baby crying sound. The puppies were only mildly concerned by Neena's concern and as soon as Sue took her out of the room they were completely relaxed with all the sounds.

The Puppy Habituation CD is available from Legacy Canine (www.legacycanine.com).Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5100285950196544575.post-76399225464209894852011-05-29T15:58:00.000-07:002011-05-29T16:25:49.281-07:00Enrichment Outing! The puppies are now 5 weeks old. Today, before we arrived Sue had let them go outside her kitchen onto her fenced in patio area for a short time. Other than that, they had not been outside before today.

Rick and I went over around noon and we took them from Sue's kitchen across the parking lot to the training yard. We carried the puppies over to the yard and brought Neena with them as well. The training yard at the kennel is a large, fully fenced in, outdoor training area with a synthetic grass surface. We laid out several things for them to explore and investigate for enrichment and exposure. The items included a small, low, sandy surfaced contact board, a small, fairly low agility table, two cardboard tubes, a small plastic covered wire rack, a rubber floor mat, a small wood teeter totter, some pvc poles, a hoola hoop and other various items lying around the yard. We also had a few holey roller balls out there. We had treats and gave small pieces of treats when the puppies investigated things. After they had already explored everything, I set some treats on the teeter, on the contact board and in the tunnels.

It was actually shocking how completely relaxed they were in this new environment. We initially set them in the sun but the synthetic grass can get hot a few looked like it was too warm so we quickly moved them to the shade. They were all very curious and confident. Every puppy was running up to all of us for attention and climbing onto the different equipment. They were also carrying around leaves and playing with the balls. We were probably out there with them for about 40 minutes or so. A few of them were starting to slow down when we took them back to Sue's and placed them in their pen. They literally passed out right where we set them and were sleeping when we left. It was a great day and I am so impressed with how outgoing and confident they are. Every time I introduce something new they investigate it with confidence and curiosity.
They are SO cute and so much fun at this age. I let them all out and lied down on the floor with them to see what they did. They were all so interactive and playful, all happy to see me and get attention. There happened to be a guy that day pressure washing Sue's house. So, when I was in there with them, he was washing outside the room they were in, it was a little bit loud and there was air a little water coming through the door. When the exercise pen is closed they cannot reach the door, but I had opened it since I was there. They were not at all suspicious or worried of the noise or air. Very solid puppies! I can't wait until tomorrow when we go back and take the puppies on a field trip to the training yard!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5100285950196544575.post-10350656882094010742011-05-21T18:56:00.000-07:002011-05-21T18:56:48.874-07:00Four Weeks and One DayRick and I went to visit the puppies today. Sue was out, so it was just us, Neena and the puppies. It was nice that Neena was comfortable and relaxed with Rick there having only met him a few times.

The puppies are doing great and seem to change and develop so much even day to day. Green Bean immediately went over to Rick asking to be picked up. Of course, Rick picked him up immediately and had a hard time setting him down. I observed that Daisy, was VERY outgoing and active today after seeming more reserved the other day. Rick was paying a lot of attention to Green Bean and I had to remind him to say hi to Blueberry, who I call Bluesy. He called Bluesy who RAN over to him all excited. All of the puppies were so happy to see us. All are affectionate and sweet and outgoing.

I brought two new toys to add to their growing collection. I brought out a scented rabbit pelt. Bluesy was chasing it and chewing on it. One of the girl puppies was too and now I can't remember which girl it was, but it was either Dolly or Daisy. Green Bean also had a go at chewing at it.

Rainbow Bright and Violet are definitely longhairs. I have to keep reminding myself that we getting a MALE, that we are getting a SMOOTH and that this is supposed to be Rick's new field puppy and trying not to look too hard at those gorgeous longhair girls.

I didn't take pictures today, just played with puppies. I love them more each time I see them. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5100285950196544575.post-6924581142178546902011-05-20T10:36:00.000-07:002011-05-20T10:37:49.491-07:00Four Weeks Old Today! The puppies turn four weeks old today! I can hardly believe that they are already four weeks and I can stand that I have to wait another 4 to 6 weeks to bring one home! The puppies have been moved from the spare bedroom to the laundry room just off the kitchen so they are in their second environment. They have a lot more space obviously which is great for them to explore and play. They have toys which we rotate.

Yesterday I went by and spent some time with them which consisted of playing, holding, stacking, scented rabbit pelt play, snuggling and a field trip to the kitchen. Next week, when they are 5 weeks old I will be taking them on a field trip outside and across the parking lot with Neena, where they will be exposed to rocks, pavement, dirt, chickens, steps, and simulated grass. I can't wait, and you can count on pictures and videos.

I am really thrilled with this litter. Other than being individuals in a normal sense, the puppies are consistent in type and temperament.

Here are some pics from yesterday, the puppies just one day shy of 4 weeks old. And yes, I do stack 4 week old puppies. I used cottage cheese from a spoon. I got decent pics if the puppies were into it and having fun. I do not force or make them do it. They are free to eat cottage and stand while I position their bodies if they choose to do so. They were all cooperative and easy peasy!

Green Bean, at this time, he is my favorite. He is balanced and low. Short little hocks. Head to die for, very much like Casey. He is a snuggle bug and crawled right up and onto me.
Blueberry, the other boy. Really nice boy too. He is a bit more elegant than Green Bean which is fine, this is where it comes down to personal preference and what you "like". He is active and on the go go go. First out of the whelping box and first to explore just about everything. I do LOVE this puppies attitude and I really like how he looks too! And no, I am not taking two home!
This is Daisy. Right now, structurally of the smooth girls, I think she is my favorite. She is a bit more reserved temperament wise, in that she takes a moment to take things in. Not necessarily a bad thing at all, just something to note. I love her length and balance. Pretty girl. Sue has had her eye on this girl from the get go.

The early enrichment/learning ideas come from a few different sources. Some of the things we are doing are my own ideas, while others come from experts such as Kay Laurence and Suzanne Clothier who have shared through books and/or lectures some of the things they do with their own puppies. This information is invaluable. I read everything I can in trying to come up with safe, positive ways to expose the puppies to many things in a way that is interesting and fun for them rather than overwhelming or frightening.

The early scentwork games as well as the interactive games that help us determine which puppies are more persistent, bold and outgoing almost completely come from my mentor in Dachshunds, Sharon Carr of Carrdox Dachshunds. Sharon has been field trialing with her Dachshunds for many, many years producing a slew of field champions including multiple absolute winning dogs and nationally ranked dogs. Over the years, Sharon has added more and more elements to the early training and then ongoing training to the point where she can pretty successfully determine who will be the most successful field dogs and to mold those that aren't as naturally good at it, into successful field dogs.

Sue and I are both fortunate to have Sharon has a mentor. She is invaluable and has the very unique ability to teach you, guide you and then, step back and let you start to think for yourself while always remaining right there to help. Based on my initial work with him with first exposure to toys, rabbit pelt and scent, I am not surprised!
All chunky and healthy and shiny. Now that their eyes are open and they are moving around we can start with some very early learning, enrichment and exposure. Today, we got some new identifier yarn collars on them again (Neena had already removed the rick rack ribbons we had originally put on) and we introduced them to several toys. It was so fun to watch them and see how they reacted to and interacted with the toys:

Next, I introduced a piece of rabbit fur to them and drug it around the whelping box. Several puppies showed interest and followed it around, then I added some very diluted rabbit scent to the pelt and drug it around with that:
Rainbow Brite (the rainbow ribbon puppy) quickly climbed off too. They are all doing great and look great. The puppies are eating well and content and Neena is taking such good care of them. They all look shiny and clean and perfect:)

There are two boys and I pretty sure which one Rick will be taking. I did a quick eval and really like the litter. The boy I like is long, has great rear angles, nice ribbing and great length of neck. People always think it's crazy that I grade them when they are born, but my picks always remain the same. It's really not that hard to pick when you know what you are looking for and what you want.

All in all, it's a beautiful litter.
Neena had 6 puppies. Because 5 were in one horn and 1 in the other, there was way too much pressure and she couldn't deliver them naturally. When they cut her open to do the c-section, the side with 5 burst and then they had to go and take the one from the other horn. Neena lost a lot of blood. She made need a transfusion, but we don't know yet. I am waiting to hear she is okay. The puppies are doing well, but Neena is not yet out of the woods....Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5100285950196544575.post-18323677111721744742011-04-22T07:45:00.000-07:002011-04-22T07:45:08.417-07:00A Bit of a SnagLast night, after I taught classes at the kennel I went in to see Neena. She looked great and was starting to have some contractions. It looked like it would be a while so I decided to go home. Sue promised to call or text when the puppies were born. I got up this morning with no text, which surprised me. I texted Sue to find what was happening. She was at the emergency clinic with Neena who contracted all night but produced no puppy. They did an x-ray and everything looks good. Sounds like uterine inertia. She is getting fluids including some oxytocin. If no puppy soon, she will have a c-section. She is good hands. Sue is with her. Stay tuned....Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5100285950196544575.post-72879330041097283462011-04-21T23:24:00.000-07:002011-04-21T23:24:17.062-07:00It's getting close!I just left Sue's and Neena was getting very close to delivering. It could still be hours, but she is having contractions here and there, nesting and very restless. She is doing great so far. Sue will sleep in the guest room where the whelping box is with Neena and poor Jack (Aussie) and Guppy (miniature wire Dachshund) and Sara (standard smooth Dachshund) will have to be abandoned for the night. Here is what Neena was looking like shortly before I left her:
They are due on Easter Sunday.....stay tunedUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5100285950196544575.post-41220739348533298262011-04-15T21:12:00.000-07:002011-04-15T21:12:15.892-07:00Bigger and Bigger and Bigger and the Rabbit Arrived!Saw Neena the other day in all her glory! What a happy, rolly polly girl she is right now!! She insisted, no demanded multiple belly rubs. She gave me "the look", and rolled over onto her back. I, of course, did just what she asked:) In all seriousness, she looks big to me. We are all getting excited.

I am also excited that the rabbit scent that I ordered has arrived! I am thinking that I will start playing with it with Ribbon maybe before the puppies arrive so that I have some to get to know it, how to handle it and how I want to store it.

It's all happening!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5100285950196544575.post-26375543645052111962011-04-06T18:06:00.000-07:002011-04-06T18:06:42.659-07:00Go Casey! As of right now, Casey, the puppies sire is currently ranked NUMBER ONE field trial Dachshund! We are hoping for puppies with a "golden nose" like their Daddy's!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5100285950196544575.post-38288312326276478012011-04-03T07:42:00.000-07:002011-04-03T07:42:42.875-07:00Waiting for the buns to bake...The waiting really IS the hardest part! I saw Neena the other day and she is looking REALLY big! It is hard (and a little bit frightening) to think that she had another month to go! If there are only four they are big ones. I'll bet that there is more. The good news is that Neena will be xrayed this month so that we will know what to expect when the time comes. I think it's time for me to go ahead and order the rabbit and hare scent! I can't wait to start putting together my training plan for the puppies! So exciting!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
